Historically, beer was made at the monastery and they sold beer in order to raise money or funds. Today, it is made in a brewery but still one can find it made at a monastery.
German beer is famous because it is so pure. In 1516, the Reinheitsgebot (German beer purity law) was passed. It states that beer must be pure. It must be made with only hop, water and barley. Sugar and yeast were permitted later. There can be no additive like an antiseptic. Even in modern day, this law is enforced very strictly. Because the Germans think that theirs is pure and other countries' is not pure, they do not drink many imported beers.
There are two categories of German beers, depending on where it precipitates during the fermentation process. The top fermenting beer is a traditional beer. During the fermentation process, the precipitation rises to the top of the surface.
Alt and Weizen are classified as a top fermenting beer. Alt is a dark copper color and its content is about four percent alcohol. The fermentation process takes about three to eight weeks. It is produced in Duesseldorf. Weizen is made from wheat. It is a yellow color and can also be known as "Weiss" beer. (Weiss means "white" in German.) It is produced in the south eastern region of Bavaria.
The bottom fermenting beer is the second category of German beers. During the fermentation process, the precipitation sinks to the bottom. Bottom fermenting beer is easier to produce. Lager, Marchen and Bock are three German beers classified as bottom fermenting beer.
Lager is made from the northern part on Germany. It is the most drank in Germany and is usually sold bottled. Lager is a German word meaning "store and preserve." Long ago when there were no refrigerators, Lager was produced in a low temperature. It has a strong bitter taste.
Marchen is made during the winter and opened during March. That is how it has got its name. It's very popular in the southern part of Germany.
Bock means "very strong" and its content is about seven to eight percent alcohol. It is a type of Lager. There are two types of Bock Lager. Hell Bock is a light Lager. Dunkle is a dark Lager. Doppel Bock is a more stronger Bock.
Beer is the most popular alcoholic drink. It is quite possibly the third most popular as a beverage after water and tea.
